In 1960, New England Journal of medicine declared “Chinese restaurant Syndrome”. Many people, within 20 minutes of eating Chinese food, experienced tingling sensation, immense hunger, brain fog, chest pain and pressure. Later, a link was found between MSG and these symptoms that people had.
MSG is a flavor enhancer, they add to restaurant food and they are using Mono Sodium Glutamate in place of Salt.
Side effects of MSG on the body:
- Glutamate is an amino acid. The liver can efficiently break down amino acids, but attachment of one molecule, sodium (monosodium), it becomes very unstable, which puts a lot of oxidative stress on the liver to break it down, that is why our body can not flush this out.
- While MSG is in the bloodstream, it fires up the nervous system and tricks the brain so that we may feel hungry again within 2 hours of consuming Chinese food. This is because it has a direct impact on the Pancreas, forcing it to produce more insulin.
3. MSG associates with an increased risk of metabolic disorders such as GERD, Type-II diabetes, Obesity, High blood pressure, etc.
4. MSG wreaks havoc on hormones and can cause PCOD, PCOS, low libido in men and women.

- Mono Sodium Glutamate creates neurotoxicity in the body, which causes brain cells to die. In children, MSG can cause attention disorders. MSG is addictive. This is why when children open a packet of chips, it’s hard to stop at one or two.
- Some researchers have linked the Mono Sodium Glutamate to higher risk of cognitive disorders such as dementia and seizures. High consumption of Mono Sodium Glutamate associates with the development of neurological diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer diseases.
Now, the question arises, processed and especially chinese foods contain MSG despite the damage caused by it, why? Because, use of Mono Sodium Glutamate with another name.
The another name is hydrolyzed vegetable protein. Due to this reason, laws allow companies to get away with representing certain ingredients in a different way.
Hydrolyzed vegetable protein sounds healthy because it contains the words ‘protein’ and ‘vegetable’. However, it’s nothing but Mono Sodium Glutamate, other names of MSG are ‘vegetable gum’ and ‘yeast extract’. There are over 20 to 25 other names of MSG.
The best way to reduce the consumption of MSG is to eat less processed food, restaurant food and Chinese food. Always prefer to eat home made food.
