gout and protein

If Patient’s uric acid is high (Hyperuricemia, Gout) could they consume protein or protein supplements?

Overburden of uric acid termed as Gout, may be the result of high purine in diet or the body may produce too much uric acid. Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism. Purines breakdown into uric acid.

Then, uric acid (1) Dissolved in the blood,

(2) Passed through the Kidneys into the urine,

(3) Eliminated from the body.

In such conditions, when the Kidneys don’t get rid of uric acid enough, then high levels build up in the blood, termed as Hyperuricemia).

There are mixed evidence about gout and protein consumption.

Now, we will discuss about protein consumption; In protein supplements, two categories are there;

  1. Animal based protein
  2. Plant based protein

Animal based proteins are high in purines, as we discussed earlier, High purines can lead to elevated levels of uric acid.

Food lists that are high in purines are Eggs, Mutton, Chicken, Salmon fish, Meat and Tuna fish. Some vegetables are also high in purines such as spinach, mushroom and cauliflower.

Plant Based proteins are low in purines and can help lower uric acid levels.

Food lists that are low in purines are Beans, lentils, legumes, sweet potatoes and wholegrains.

Now, we will discuss the consumption of protein supplements. Excess protein intake may cause hyperuricemia, chemical compounds that are produced by the body as a result of breakdown of purines in protein metabolism.

(1) Whey and isolate Whey Protein powder are milk products. Dairy products may increase uric acid in blood.

Some studies show dairy products don’t affect the production of uric acid and some studies show dairy products increase uric acid production and we should avoid whey and isolate whey protein supplement because high protein contains high Purines which is not advisable.

(2) Plant based protein supplements are advisable because they contain low purines levels.
